A pilot can be the 'ace' of the airways ...dodging the enemy.

As he gets older, his skills diminish ...and he has to likely be replaced.  He doesn't often like it, but he can train his replacement.  His vast knowledge is invaluable, and that has increased with age.

As he gets even older, his mind may diminish ...but what he has taught others has not.

He has taught many ...and has taught them well.

As he passes away, that which he has taught others ...hasn't (passed away, that is).
